Comments: Hello, I have planned the next first two weeks of july a walk on the WHW from Milngavie to Fort Williams with my wife. Is that possible for you to send me a precise description of the walk between Inversaid and Inverarnan. Specially the part of the way which cross a precipitous waterfall, includes the ascent and descent the both side of the bridge. Do you think a rope would be necessary to secure an inexperimented walker when the path becomes steep ? Many thanks in advance for your advice. Kind regards, Olivier Rufenacht

Comments: Hi Gregg, I have just stumbled across your blog and how glad I was I did. Found it a really interesting read and loved the pictures. Impressed that a man of your mature years still has the determination to do such walks, you put men of my age (52) to shame. I stumbled across you as I was researching for a potential walk that myself and a few of my friends hopefully are attempting this year. In the Lake District Ravenglass to Penrith. We are looking at raising a few ££ for Motor neurone disease (MND) charity. One of our close friends has just been diagnosed with this horrible condition. Could I ask what was your guide book or which trial book or guide book did you use for your walk?

Comments: Found your walking pages while researching practicalities of replicating some sections of Wainwright's Lost Tour. Now 65 I resumed long distance walking seven years ago. In 2010 my daughter and I completed The Greater Ridgeway, following Ray Quinlan and the Norfolk Coast Path. Easy walking but for the first days in East Dorset which can be challenging. Since then mulling a variation of Andy McCloy's east route to tackle LEJOG in stages. A Christmas present in the form of Ed Geldard's visual recreation of Wainwright's tour inspired me as much as your website. Plodding along country lanes from Land's End north is something I can do at any time; the Lake District is best enjoyed sooner rather than later, especially the ridges and peaks. I will be returning to these pages and truly appreciate the work you have put into them. They encourage and inspire. Thank you.

Comments: Hi Gregg.
Came across your Cumbria Way trip report and it is really good reading and the photos, excellent too.
I did the Cumbria Way many years ago in 1986 and it is a lovely walk to do. My memories of it, was a very wet morning from Coniston to Skelwith Bridge, but the High Close was very comfy, so was not too bad at that. The weather did improve for the rest of the way, despite very windy conditions on High Pike. Guessing the Cumbria Way will not of changed that much in that time, that I'm planning to do it again this October, in four days, camping.
This is a walk, despite being only 70 miles, packs a hell of lot of scenery in such a short week.
Again, thanks.
Martin

Comments: Hi Gregg,
I've enjoyed your journals about your walks. Like you I love walking in the UK. I've done done the West Highland Way, the Coast to Coast, Offa's * * * and am doing the Pembrokeshire Coast Path this May. I love how you can hike all day, have a room ready for you and have your baggage taken to your next stop. The best of all worlds! My biggest problem is how most trails aren't well marked as compared to trails in the US. I get lost alot! I really got lost on the CTC. Are you doing another walk this year? I look forward to reading about another journey you've been on.

Comments: Hi Gregg!
I have thoroughly enjoyed reading through all of your walk journals over the past few days. Like you, I am an American who has fallen in love with walking/hiking in the UK. I am have done the London LOOP and the West HIghland Way/Great Glen Way in the past two years. I will be doing the Cotswold Way in about three weeks. Are you planning a walk this year yourself? I am really inspired by your tales of life on the trail and hope that I will still be out there walking when I hit your age (you have 10+ years on me or so). Best of luck in your next adventure.

Comments: Hi Gregg
Awesome trip. When you're thinking of going again let us know, we'd love to join you. I remember when we did the C2C there was a group of Americans travelling similar distances as us on consecutive days. Each time we came to a part where the choice was high level or valley bottom they all chose the easier low level route. For the life of us we could not figure out why when the weather was so good they opted for no views but I guess they had their reasons. Give me a good ridge walk any day! Thanks for the journal write-up.

Comments: Hi Gregg I really enjoyed reading your "Cumbria Way With Add-Ons". It's a great example of how a walker can create a bespoke experience from an established route. The term "sneck-lifter" does indeed refer to the "sneck" of a door. The sneck has to be lifted by anyone wanting to pass through the door. It was traditional in my home town that a man couldn't enter a pub if he didn't have the price of a drink - a reasonable enough tradition. Once inside, he'd buy his drink, and his friends might buy him subsequent drinks. He would return the favour when he had his weekly paypacket. So the sneck-lifter was the price of a pint, and I'm told that when my grandfather was short of the price of a pint his mother in law sometimes gave him a "sneck-lifter" and told him to get across the road to the pub and stop looking so miserable!
